A project, supported by Fondazione CON IL SUD, about the transformation of the Castle/former district prison into a common good: the building incorporates part of the historical events that have marked the history of the town over the centuries.
From a Norman stronghold to a Bourbon prison, today the Vizzini castle is open to the community, to visitors and to the schools: starting from the rediscovery of the “agri-food” traditions of Vizzini, and in particular those linked to honey, it is the perfect scene where cultural heritage education and educational activities related to the world of bees take place.

The project will valorize the Castle/former prison, a site located in the internal areas around Catania and nominated by the Municipality of Vizzini for the “Il Bene torna comune” call, through the creation of a “social enterprise” aimed at the development of the territory and to the creation of new scenarios of agri-food and cultural self-entrepreneurship. Specialist training, beekeeping didactic, social theater, recreational and educational activities for environmental and heritage education, are just some of the project’s activities.
Finally, a mentoring program dedicated to a new social cooperative has the aim of starting the production of new products that valorize the territory, using ancient production know-how of Vizzini and in particular those linked to honey. The new company will support the agri-food production chain with culturally based social activities, with the aim of enhancing the active and conscious participation of the community, in a silent exchange generative of cohesion and collaboration.
Sited on one of the three hills of Vizzini, the Castle, a former district prison, is a palimpsest that contains part of the history of the city. Archaeological finds allow us to date back the history of the area where the Norman castle stands which then, over the centuries, changed its intended use and became a district prison. Today it is a repurposed space available to the city, a common good for socializing and sharing.
The active community born around and inside the Castle – former prison of Vizzini meets the industrious community of bees. BeeDINI – Vizzini 2023 is an exchange, a swarm of skills that starts from a specific place and becomes an opportunity for the city.
